What is the Role of Fluoride in Dental Caries ?

What is the Role of Fluoride in Dental Caries ?

Have you seen children with stained teeth and wondered how they could get tobacco-like stains at a young age? That is because of excess Fluoride consumption which causes Fluorosis.

Do you know why toothpaste is added with fluoride, whereas we hear of a disease called fluorosis in India caused by high fluoride intake?

Fluoride is used in dentistry as an anti-cariogenic agent or anti-cavity agent. But excess consumption causes “fluorosis” of teeth, especially in children whose teeth are under gums and are not fully formed.

Read on to learn more about the controversy surrounding fluoride, its advantages, and its side effects.

What Does Fluoride Do To Your Teeth?

Fluoride makes the enamel (outer surface of teeth) stronger, resistant to acid attacks, and prevents tooth decay.

When bacteria in your mouth break down sugar and carbs, they produce acids that eat away the minerals in your tooth enamel. This loss of minerals is called demineralization. Weakened tooth enamel leaves your teeth vulnerable to bacteria that cause cavities.

It helps to remineralize your tooth enamel, which can prevent cavities and reverse early signs of tooth decay.

Natural Sources of Fluoride:

Water: It has been added to public water supplies to bring the levels up to the amount necessary to help prevent tooth decay, this is called Community water fluoridation. The desirable limit of fluoride as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is 1ppm.

  • Soil
  • Food
  • Beverages
  • Toothpaste
  • Mouth rinses

What is that Peculiar Pink Spot on your Tooth ?

The human mind is predisposed to making sense. We tend to visualize the things that we hear about. We hear the word teeth and automatically picture mostly rectangular or square-shaped structures that are white (as most of us desire) in color, or perhaps with a hint of yellow. But how would you react if someone told you that their tooth was turning pink? It’s strange, isn’t it? Well, no matter how unbelievable it sounds, a pink tooth isn’t fictitious.

What exactly is a pink tooth?

As the word itself suggests, ‘Pink tooth’ is a tooth. Which looks pink in color and has a pinkish hue to it.

Why does my tooth look pink?

The portion of teeth that is visible to us (also known as the crown) is broadly made up of three layers. –

  • Enamel – outermost layer
  • Dentin – middle layer
  • Pulp – innermost layer

The pulp chamber is filled with nerves and vessels. Scientists speculate that the loss of internal dentin results in an increase in the space occupied by the pulp chamber, thereby allowing more blood vessels to use up the vacant area and giving the tooth a pinkish hue...

Want to Enhance Your Smile? Dental Veneers

In the era of social media, we often find ourselves lacking confidence, getting overwhelmed by what we see in the virtual world. Apps that are meant to help connect with the world have also taken our image consciousness to a whole new level. Do you ever find yourself envying the smile of those Instagram models and celebrities, and wondered how they have such perfect smiles ? Did you ever wish to change your smile, in order to boost up your self-esteem but thought that you couldn’t do anything about it ? What if you were told that it is possible for you to change your smile and re-design it ? No, you do not need to find Aladdin’s magic lamp and summon a Genie to grant you your wish, all you have to do is visit an aesthetic dentist / prosthodontist. Dental Veneers can aid you in getting that pearly white perfect smile which you have always desired.

Dental Veneers What Are They?

Dental Veneers are thin tooth-colored shell-like structures that are attached to the front surface of a tooth to change its appearance.

Who Needs Dental Veneers ?

People who want to change the appearance of their smile can opt for Dental Veneers.

Dental veneers would be helpful in following cases –

  • Closing gaps – Spacing between teeth can be present due to many reasons the most common being the size of the bone with respect to the natural teeth. If despite having healthy gums you observe that there is gap between your teeth you need not worry, it can be rectified using dental Veneers. Of course, not everyone is an ideal candidate for veneers in many cases Orthodontic treatment might be required to achieve the desired results.
  • Discolouration – Change in teeth colour can be caused due to many reasons such as tobacco chewing, frequent betel leaf chewing, etc. Sometimes higher quantity of chemicals like fluoride (which is present in water, food, toothpastes, etc) and some antibiotics can also cause staining in our teeth. Some types of stains can be removed by getting cleaning (scaling) done by a dentist. But in cases where stain is present internally it is not possible to get rid of these stubborn stains by scaling. Dental Veneers can be the treatment of choice in these cases. Veneers can make your smile brighter and healthy as you have always wished for.
  • Wear and tear – Wear and tear, chipping and some fractures of teeth due to minor accidents leads to change in the shape of the teeth which might be unesthetic to look at. Dental veneers can be used in such cases to mend the problem and create a beautiful smile.

Dental Veneers: What Are They Made Of ?

Dental Veneers improve the appearance of your smile by masking discolorations, closing gaps, correcting minor misalignments and mending chipped teeth. Each veneer is customized to adjust the color, size, shape, appearance, position, rotations, texture of an individual’s teeth.

Have you ever wondered what are these dental veneers made up of ?

Depending on the results that one is aiming for there are different types of Dental Veneers that can be used.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are also known as composite resin veneers. They can usually be done in a single session. They are made up of resin or plastic which makes them prone to staining, chipping and breakage. However, they can also be easily repaired. The procedure for composite veneers involves restoring the tooth structure, layer by layer with composite followed by polishing when desired shape and size have been attained. We have certain limitations of getting a natural effect with composite veneers.

Porcelain Veneers

These are thin shell-like structures made up of ceramics. They are more durable than composite veneers. The strength of porcelain veneers is pretty close to the strength of the human enamel. If taken good care, porcelain veneers may even last from somewhere between 10 to 20 years. They help in attaining a more natural look and give a better translucency as compared to the composite veneers. Due to recent advancements in the field of esthetic dentistry the porcelain veneers have enhanced to the point that it is almost impossible to distinguish between a veneer and a natural tooth.

Non-Prep Veneers

As the name itself suggests ‘non-prep veneers’ are no preparation veneers. They are made up of a material called disilicate lithium and are popular as E Max Veneers. There is barely any tooth reduction to be done for this type of dental veneer. Their thickness can be somewhere between 0.3mm to 0.5mm, which is quite similar to that of contact lens. They are exceptionally thin but durable enough. They are used in cases where fullness of the teeth has to be increased. However, one drawback to these kinds of veneers because of their ultra-thin nature is that in some cases it gets difficult to mask major discolorations and the darker tooth shows underneath....
